Storage solution for online sales and distribution of the iconic Dr.Martens brand

The British brand, founded in 1901 as a working clothes and footwear manufacturer, is renowned for its Dr.Martens boots made trendy by rock stars and seen on the main fashion catwalks of the world.

Need

The company was moving to a new 9,662 m2 logistics facility near Northampton to work from here with wholesale distribution and sales through the online channel.

Solution

The layout provided two storage zones:

• Adjustable pallet racking:

42 rows of adjustable pallet racking were installed with a capacity of 6,700 pallets and direct access to all of them. The space between each shelf row was increased by 50 mm compared to the original design to incorporate the sprinklers of the fire protection system.

The lower levels of the racks in this storage zone were fitted with mesh grating shelves on beams for the picking processes.

• Mezzanines:

To make use of the space at height, two mezzanines were installed for clothing stock, filing materials, creating a packaging area, and providing a space for charging the handling equipment.

• Racking on the mezzanine floor for storing boxes.
• Shelving on the mezzanine floor to manage returns from the online channel, designed to contain a wide variety of references.
